For Procurement Heads’ latest Big Interview, Laura spoke with Gemma Burman about her career in procurement and what challenges she and other procurement leaders currently face in the industry. How did you get into Procurement? So, like most people, I didn’t choose procurement. I think it chose me. I started my career at nPower, a large utility company.

How did you get into procurement? I sometimes wonder actually, how did I end up here? But it was quite simple for me, I was leading the National operation for a rather large FMCG organisation and this included logistics, supply chain, quality management, innovation and field operation, unbeknown to me there was a procurement team from the centre that had decided to consider outsourcing the whole operation, but what they had failed to do was engage with the key stakeholder, me.

I am currently a partner at Edenseven, a consultancy based on delivering business performance through sustainability, but my background is as a Procurement Director and Global CPO. I first moved into procurement at Coca-Cola and ended up leading the strategic procurement team there, I was then Group Procurement Director for Dairy Crest before moving to become Global CPO for Tata Global Beverages.

I studied procurement and obtained a Master’s degree in supply chain and international procurement. Following three years of studying international business, I had the option to choose across various specialisations for my Master’s degree and decided to try something completely new, which would sort of enhance my curriculum.

That’s according to the latest statistics from the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo) – the trade body for the professional recruitment sector. The data – provided by Bullhorn – revealed that permanent jobs grew 10% month-on-month in March while demand for highly skilled contractors rose 4%. Placements also increased, up 21% for permanent jobs and 11% for contract positions between February and March.

Data released by the Office for National Statistics in February showed that a record number of people moved out of “economic inactivity” – which is defined as people not looking for employment between July and December 2022, as more got jobs. Fuelling this was people within the 16-24 and 50-64-year-old age brackets – with the latter group leading to the “great unretirement trend” emerging.
