In the age of information, it’s surprising that supply chain digital transformation isn’t as readily available as one would expect. Have you ever wondered why? – Nate Morrison

My Thoughts (For What It’s Worth)

The short answer: Because digital transformation is seen as a technology issue – and there isn’t a shortage of technologies.

After 40-plus years in high tech and almost as long in procurement, I can say with complete certainty that technology has never been, is not now, or will ever be the driver of any form of transformation – digital or otherwise.

Here are a couple of articles explaining why:

4 Years on: How COVID exposed 3 Procurement Orthodoxies | SAP Blogs – Gordon Donovan

My Thoughts (For What It’s Worth)

Procurement Orthodoxy 1 – A rush to rationalize procurement

“In a world where both public and private sector organizations are looking for a marketplace “that never stops growing and always allows both contract and non-contract participation,” these ideas – which have always been bad, by the way – are the antithesis of the new B2B world.” – Maverick Spend, Change Management, and Vendor Rationalization, Procurement Insights (2013)

Procurement Orthodoxy 2 – Over-reliance on Lean Manufacturing

“A major metropolitan transit authority contract established a target Service Level Agreement (SLA) for service call resolution of 90% same day (on-site 3 hours) to support their critical IT infrastructure.” – The Number 1 Question . . . How Can You Help Us? Procurement Insights (2008)

NOTE: While the above example deals with an Indirect Procurement Material situation, the same methodology is equally applicable to Direct Materials.

Procurement Orthodoxy 3 – Repeatedly pushing out Payment terms

NOTE: There are many reasons for a disconnect to occur between procurement and the supply network. Regarding a creative approach to payments, check out the Facebook case reference.
