What's the best way to choose warehouses for your logistics network?
A "network" view of a warehouse investment requires the consideration of the location, the size and the type of ALL facilities in the existing network and their relationship to one another. Tactical considerations such as customer territory assignment and delivery frequency also influence the decision. The network-level effects and the trade-offs need to be based on objective measures, not "feelings" or ""experience." This can only be achieved via network design software that can model ALL of these trade-offs using a Total Cost to Serve (TCTS) view of the world, including inbound/outbound transport, handling, inventory storage, inventory investment, fixed/variable operations costs and quantifyable service penalties.

What's the best way to choose warehouses for your logistics network?
Good points. In addition, "size" has to be measured in both max floor space as well as max volume, and they depend on a lot of factors, including: 1. inventory mix of the products in the warehouse, 2. inventory turns measured seasonally, 3. storage mechanisms (racks, floorspace, stacking constraints) 4. Level of automation in inbound handling, putaway, pick&pack and outbound handling capacity Also, need to consider the reconfigurability and expansion/contraction flexibility of the warehouse. They all influence the "size."

What's the best way to choose warehouses for your logistics network?
Location matters but should consider both the inbound (being close to your supply sources) and outbound (being close to your customers) transport costs. Also, the candidate locations need to be cost-feasible: being in the middle of Paris may allow you to be close to your customers but be prohibitively expensive to open/rent and to operate. At the end of the day, a rational selection always boils down to optimizing Total Cost to Serve, accounting for both fixed and variable costs to meet a service level target. All else is subjective.
