David Loseby always posts insightful and thought-provoking questions, tagging his knowledge community to hear their thoughts on pressing topics. The following is no exception:

Undoubtedly Artificial intelligence (AI) has outpaced the development of policies to ensure that its benefits are achieved and harms avoided. A recent House of Commons: Science, Innovation and Technology Committee set out what it sees as The 12 challenges of AI governance that must be addressed by policymakers.

The following is my response – what are your thoughts?

Thanks for the tag, David.

Each one of the raised 12-points warrant deep disussion. For example, the Black Box Challenge has paralyzed many CFOs from embracing AI to the extent that they should, e.g., the following quote from Industry Dive‘s Jim Tyson:

“Innovation in AI has prompted talk of a coming technological leap as profound as the creation of the internet. It has also sparked anxiety. CFOs need to navigate past the hype and fear.”

Regarding Bias and Employment Challenges, Iain Campbell McKenna has talked about this at length in many of his articles.

Perhaps the overarching fact that covers all points is this:

“The critical play is not the tech but the expertise behind the tech – the market expertise and experience to leverage tech to solve a problem.” – https://bit.ly/3R2SdT9

In short, AI is an extenstion of human experience and expertise – NOT a replacement for it! As long as we do not abdicate our responsibility for critical thinking and ongoing intervention, we will remain in the driver’s seat.

Conversely, governance or legislation that is driven by fear instead of fact, politics instead of informed policies might be a bigger threat.
