“Delighted to launch our first End-to-End Supply Chain graduate programme. Please share with anyone in your personal or professional network who might be interested”☕️ – Stuart Nicholas, Global End-to-End Supply Chain Strategy & Transformation Director – Costa Coffee (The Coca-Cola Company)

“Our brand new, 2-year rotational programme starts in January 2024 and provides a fantastic opportunity to build a career in Supply Chain through placements in areas including Roastery Production, Procurement, Planning, and Strategy” 🫘 – Ruth South, Global Talent Development & Apprenticeships Lead (Costa Coffee)

After 40 years, it is impressive how the procurement profession has progressively evolved from a transactional to a strategic role through programs like the one referenced in the two quotes above.

I remember writing a post in 2015 about procurement’s “Generation Next” and the new capabilities they were bringing to the table. – https://bit.ly/41rLwfc

Here we are in 2024 – almost a decade later- and do the skills needed to excel in procurement align with the requirements of a very different world?

According to an Oct. 2023 CIPS – The Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply post, these are the top 5 skills today (use the following link to access the full list):

🥇 Great relationship management.
🥇 Strong negotiation skills.
🥇 Impeccable time management.
🥇 Strategic thinking.
🥇 Ability to adapt to change.

Is There A Talent Shortage?

(Note: The above is a comment from the post announcing the Costa Coffee program)

Is the talent shortage real? Maybe, maybe not.

What I am sure of is that the program referenced in Stuart Nicholas and Ruth South‘s earlier quotes represents a big step toward addressing the talent crunch.

Early in the pandemic, I wrote an article for The Procurement Italia – Procurement Professional 2.0: Why our industry needs a talent reboot. – https://bit.ly/3KVzCom. Here is an excerpt from that article that explains the evolution of my thinking regarding talent development:

For example, for the six consecutive years leading up to the pandemic, more than half of CPOs said they did not believe their teams possessed the needed skills to enable them to achieve their strategic objectives. Once again, this was before the pandemic.

Conversely, company investment in education and training during the same period steadily declined.

So, here is the question: What are organizations doing now to both develop and acquire talent to meet these even greater challenges and demands?

Also, what areas of skills development are a priority?”

Once again, the Costa Coffee Supply Chain Graduate Program will address the talent question.

What do you think?
