AMAZON: Is this the future of procurement?

I opened my inbox, and as I was sipping my second cup of coffee, I noted the following email (see image below):

While waiting for the caffeine to kick in, three Procurement Insights posts from the past immediately came to mind.

December 5th, 2007 – Microsoft Acquires SAP? (A Commentary)

September 12th, 2014 – Is Amazon The New Oracle or How The Emergence of The B2C World Marks The Official End of The ERP Era

April 19th, 2023 – The Road Not Taken: How The Mendocino Project May Have Altered Procurement’s Digital Transformation

What do the above three posts spanning 16 years have in common? The quest for end-user convenience, acceptance, and successful adoption.

Like the adoption and continuing ubiquitous use of Microsoft’s Excel and Outlook, the fact that “70%of American adults are Amazon Prime members” means that end-user adoption should be a given under the right circumstances.

The following April 2023 excerpt from an Amazon post suggests that the company recognizes and is actively pursuing a strategy that goes beyond the traditional B2C model:

“The Amazon Business team is committed to long-term success of their business and its customers. Day in and day out, we dig into the specific purchasing needs of businesses and organizations and come up with innovative ways to deliver great prices, extensive selection, and consistent, reliable convenience.”

So, why wouldn’t a procurement professional use Amazon’s evolving platform to procure products for their companies?
