EDITOR’S NOTE: Here is one comment I received regarding yesterday’s supplier diversity post and my subsequent response.

Reader Comment:

Jon W. Hansen, in my opinion, it’s one of those where all parties have an accountability to act. Consumers and Shareholders require/pressure/demand higher diversity; Procurement has the organizational power to enable and convert purchases into social opportunities. Suppliers have the most beneficial ways to fulfill that demand. Can’t be done alone.

My Response:

Thiago Braga, MBA, BBA, SCMP™ I agree that it takes a collaborative effort on the part of all stakeholders – something that is easier said than done.

Three years ago, I wrote a LinkedIn post asking, “Can procurement collaborate and innovate outside of a crisis situation?” – https://bit.ly/3DEbO46

With more than 90,000 views, it stimulated a great deal of discussion. In it, I talk about Kate Vitasek’s seminal I-35W case study. Kate, when it comes to the required level of cooperation and coordination, is there the collaborative will necessary to make supplier diversity programs successful?

Another factor that comes to mind is the influence of the consumer, e.g., voting with their dollars. How much weight and power does the consumer have? Here is a link to an article where I cite case examples of “buycott versus boycott.” – https://bit.ly/3C1GbRl

Perhaps, to connect the dots, we need more tangible case studies, such as the one involving VICTORIA’S SECRET’Shttps://bit.ly/3Gsm5li
