(A Technology Story) – Eating Right, Exercise, and Getting Enough Sleep. Knowing What’s Right Is Not The Same As Doing What’s Right!

Would you agree or disagree with the following statements:

  • Eating right is important
  • Getting regular exercise is important
  • Getting enough sleep every night is important

If you answered yes to each of the above statements, do you practice each one regularly?

“According to the National Institutes of Health, the average adult sleeps less than seven hours per night. In today’s fast-paced society, six or seven hours of sleep may sound pretty good. In reality, though, it’s a recipe for chronic sleep deprivation.” – HelpGuide.org (July 2023)

You may be thinking, what does the above have to do with procurement, supply chain, and digital technology?

Do You Hang Clothes On Your Treadmill?

Recent posts by industry rebels such as Tom Mills, Joël Collin-Demers, Mathew Schultz, and Daniel Barnes champion the need for procurement professionals to step up to the plate and elevate their game to a new level. I can’t argue with that because they are right.

I was tagged in a post by Spice Technology Groups’ Neel Sharma regarding his article “Why Planning, Forecasting & Analytics Investments Need a Supply Chain Data Network.” Like the above statement from the next-gen rabble-rousers, how could I disagree – he’s right!

But like eating, exercising, and sleeping, knowing what’s right and doing what’s right are unfortunately worlds apart.

“So much for bulge-battling New Year’s resolutions: Nearly 50 percent of Americans ditch their gym memberships by the end of January, according to a recent study.” – New York Post (2016)

How many of us every New Year’s Day challenge ourselves to exercise more, buy a treadmill, or purchase a gym membership with every honest intention to feel and look better? How many of us are still using it by the end of February?

Pop Quiz: Is it the treadmill’s or the gym’s fault?

Procurement’s Level of Fitness

In his opening paragraph, Sharma writes: “Had an interesting chat with a CIO client last week around the value of a “supply chain data network” where integrated trading partners can exchange inventory management data in a prescribed process-driven environment in real-time/near real-time with 100% of the supply chain community.”

He then writes, “The context was whether such a network is needed, as a precursor to investments in analytics, planning and forecasting investments.”

Let’s call the above “Procurement’s Fitness.”

Would anyone argue about the importance of data and the need for a “supply chain data” network? You don’t have to answer that question.

Probably not.

However, how many organizations still have a “data problem?”

“Interestingly though, a large percentage of companies that have fully implemented these modern technologies are not actually satisfied with the results.” – Deloitte 2019 Global CPO Survey

Pop Quiz #2: Is it technology’s fault?

Is it time for procurement to “”ditch” the stretchy pants”get in shape” and own our failures to win our success!

In short, stop blaming treadmills (and technology), and start using them correctly! The results will be amazing.
