There are many different charts that assess service providers.

These are helpful programs in that you see the names and the positions of each player. However, I think it is equally important to “know the players themselves.”

Why is it important to “know” the players, e.g., people behind the companies?

After 40-plus years in high-tech and almost as long in procurement, it isn’t about the technology – let’s face it, all are technologically sound, meaning they will work as coded.

The real difference-maker isn’t the features, functions, and benefits of the tech but the specific industry or market experience and expertise behind it.

As someone with a long history of successful digital transformation initiatives in both the public and private sectors, that is what I look for – the who, how, and outcomes they have achieved.

The first step in this process is having a frank, uncut, off-the-cuff non-marketing-centric talk with the people behind the company’s vision.

If I feel comfortable with their experience, expertise, and technology offering, I will bring them together with my practitioner-side subscribers with whom their solutions best align and actively participate in the discovery process.

I will then write my recommendations regarding a successful implementation path as a point of reference and a guide.

The ultimate goal is to move the digital transformation needle of procurement from a conceptual promise to a tangible realization of intended results.
