Don’t Bite The Invisible Hand That Feeds You!

What is the biggest challenge food industry giants like Tyson Foods face regarding supply and demand?

Kelly Barner‘s article on the “invisible hand” is a great read, and it inspired me to write the following comment:

First, you nicely simplified the situation’s complexity into bite-sized morsels of insight.

I want to add another element to the discussion as it speaks to supply abundance.

Flashfood FoodHero Too Good To Go – these apps enable me to purchase a broad range of products – including “quality meats” from my local grocery stores and restaurants, at 30% to 60% off the regular price. I am not talking about table scraps here, but the excess inventory of quality products and brands every week.

Not only is this great for cutting your food costs, but it also gives you access to premium food products while – and this is the added benefit, being socially responsible, i.e., eliminating food waste.

As the public becomes more familiar with these apps, the balance of buying power, e.g., the invisible hand, will be permanently shifted to the end-consumer. After all, outside of the weekly flyer specials, I can wait for that prime rib or salmon filet until I can more easily digest it at a reasonable price without the aftereffect of budget heartburn.

Ultimately, the powershifts, as you describe, is a waiting game. Cut supply and starving the public is not a great option.

Is avoiding “food waste” a game changer for the food and retail grocery industries?

Thoughts?
