The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of ChatGPT AI? (One Year Later)

EDITOR’S NOTE: One year ago today, I posted the following to LinkedIn and received some notable reactions regarding the ChatGPT controversy. How might these opinions change now that we have “experienced” ChatGPT?

Great post by Bernard Marr – so, what is The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of ChatGPT AI? (source: Sergio Leone)

Here are my thoughts:

I love the power of algorithms and AI’s capabilities. I sold my company based on the early days of this tech for $12 million. In short, I am a fan. However, I also realize its limitations.

I see ChatGPT as the next generation of Google. The only difference is that it doesn’t reveal its information’s source(s), which significantly increases the prospect of plagiarism. However, its most significant threat is that it removes critical thinking from the equation turning people from knowledge contributors into information curators. In short, because of its speed and convenience, we can become little more than a passthrough agent of others’ collective thoughts with the same awareness and understanding of its contents that a letter carrier who delivers our mail has of the contents in their mailbags.

To be clear, I see the exciting possibilities of ChatGPT to streamline the research process. But as a co-founder of Second City once told me, “it isn’t really a superpower unless it can also be used for evil.”

The evil, in this case, is if we submit the output from ChatGPT without 1. confirming & sharing the source, and 2. not adding our insights and experiences to the information we ultimately share with others.

Thoughts?
