EDITOR’S NOTE: In his share of a post by Andrew Hilger talking about Microsoft’s leadership, Mintec’s Vinay Kapoor said the following about leadership:

“Leadership is an exercise in bringing the best out of everyone, and yes, it involves being tough from time to time, but it is not about being the loudest voice in the room.”

What are your thoughts on the above comment?

Here are mine:

Let’s focus on Microsoft to start.

Here is an excerpt from a May 2021 article – https://bit.ly/424I9fJ

“When he took the helm of Microsoft in 2014, CEO Satya Nadella talked about the importance of organizations creating a data culture so that everyone could “make better decisions based on (quality) data.”

Echoing Nadella’s visionary direction, a March 2020 Harvard Business Review article presents what we believe is an essential cornerstone for laying a solid data practice foundation: successfully creating a data-driven culture.”

When I interviewed Kevin Peesker – who was at the time President of Microsoft Canada, he said two things that continue to resonate with me:

1. In the digital age, you must “transform or be transformed.”
2. It is critical for our industry’s success to encourage more women to enter the STEM fields. And Kevin walked the talk as most of his senior management team were women.

The above speaks to the company’s forward-looking mindset.

The takeaway: culture – including humility, empathy, and insatiable curiosity starts at the top of an organization.

As a side note, I entered the high-tech world in 1983. If you had invested $1,000 in 1986, it would be worth $4.1 million today. 😉
