What are the benefits of technology adoption – including AI?

According to a June 2023 TechTarget article, there are twelve, including better decisions, efficiency and productivity gains, improved speed of business, and so forth. I am sure you can think up many more.

So, in the spirit of today’s post title – recognizing all of these great benefits, where is your organization or company on the AI technology adoption curve (see graph below).

While you are considering the answer to the above question, here is an “interesting” stat from the August 2022 Supply Chain Dive article regarding current overall user adoption statistics:

Six in 10 IT leaders are concerned end users are not adopting new tech quickly enough, endangering the return on investment for digital projects, according to an annual digital adoption report by WalkMe.

As I wrote in a soon-to-be-published article, the date of the above report is 2022, not 1999, 2005, 2007 or 2013. We are talking about the digital transformation era and the emergence of AI.

Why in 2023, with all that digital technology and AI has to offer, are we still struggling with gaining meaningful traction when it comes to end-user adoption?

Because technology is usually not built with the end-user in mind, it is built to achieve what is still an elusive end result.

In the early 1980s I remember when I would bang on the keyboard of my old Kaypro personal computer. Running on the CP/M operating system – it was before the emergence of the DOS-based PC, everyone thought it was neat, except, of course, the IT department. The IT people viewed it as a passing phase we would all get over in a little while. By the way, that was 41 years ago, and the PC has been anything but a passing phase. Computer power has evolved beyond anything most of us could have fathomed.

Yet here we are in 2023, and most companies are still struggling with end-user adoption. Why?

In an upcoming article I will provide you with my usual well-researched data, and throw in a little experience and expertise regarding why user acceptance continues to lag behind technologoical advancement.

In the meantime, I welcome your thoughts on the “why” question.
